We put forward a three-dimensional joint inversion algorithm framework for magnetotelluric data and seismic traveltime data using a cross-gradient coupling method.Based on a well-developed three-dimensional magnetotelluric staggered-grid finite difference forward algorithm and an eikonal-equation-based seismic FMM (fast marching method) traveltime ray tracing algorithm, a three-dimensional joint inversion algorithm having common inversion grids, with cross-gradient as structural constraint, and with both resistivity and velocity models able to be simultaneously obtained has been achieved. With synthetic data pairs from single prism model, trial computation of joint inversion has been carried out, and the results indicate that, compared with single inversion, joint inversion has better effect in recovering single prisms spatial morphology and true values, and also enhances the velocity features in the deep part of the single prism.
