The same as the other developing countries in the world,China is undergoing rapid urbanization process currently, which drives Chinese cities, small and large, into dynamic changes. In this study, changes of landscape and land-use of Yuzhong peninsula in Chongqing city in the past 100 years were thoroughly investigated.Chongqing city is typical for many chances and challenges,it has experienced in the selected research period, with its origin being the Yuzhong peninsula.Currently, the Yuzhong peninsula is the heart of the mega-city,which is also to be forged into a Class 4A Tourist Destinations in China taking advantages of its gifted natural mountains,water-bank and human landscapes.Changes taking place in Yuzhong peninsula are both representative and enlightening for understanding the historic path and finding the ideal future of evolutionary development for the similar core parts of current Chinese big cities.Based on the literature search, graphic information collection and field survey of the study area, data and information from variable sources were analyzed.5 periods were divided for the convenience of this study based on important historical events in this district, namely : from 1890 to 1937 (opened as the commercial port) ;from 1937 to 1949 (established as the wartime capital) ;from 1949 to 1978 (as an important industrial city in three-line interior region construction) ;from 1978 to 1997 (city undergoing reform and opening) and from 1998 to the current (as the 4th municipality of China). There are two focal points in this study, namely the way how people use this area (land-use),and the way how people protect and preserve this area (landscape reservation). As a carrying land for diversified living and production activities, its important to find out the mankind introduced impacts and environmental response in built-up areas for understanding the evaluation of the healthy and sustainability of cities. We hope this study may make contribution to the theory and practice of sustainable city plan for the cities undergoing rapid urbanization process.
