Nowadays, developing low carbon energy is becoming a considerable stake. The demand of electricity is increasing all over the world. This spawns the real challenge of increasing the production of electricity while reducing carbon emissions.Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) are able to meet this demand. Therefore, NPPs are being extended and designed with new features to increase their production. To achieve this, an efficient lifetime management and a reliable availability of the plant have to be ensured.Against this background, AREVA NP developed some fatigue-oriented tools: Areva Fatigue Concept (AFC) and its key module Fatigue Monitoring System integrated (FAMOSi).Fatigue is mainly due to mechanical stress, pressure and thermal loads. The strategy is to employ local fatigue monitoring as a straightforward solution enabling the direct measurement of loads on the zones sensitive to fatigue. This approach takes into account environmental factors according to the new code requirements via Environmental Assisted Fatigue (EAF).In this way, NPP operators will overcome potential differences existing between the design transients and transients that actually occurred during plant operation.FAMOSi is a revolutionary stand-alone system. It has been recently upgraded according to experiences and feedback gained from operators over several decades. It consists of an instrumentation leading to display and calculates online fatigue usage of sensitive components.Indeed, thanks to FAMOSi, accurate usage factor supported by measured data can be extremely fast online-calculated.Later on, data is used as basis for optimizing operating modes, so as to operate plants in a more productive, efficient and, thus, economic way.The online fatigue monitoring system is an easy-handling system. It is adjustable and can be installed in new NPPs, as well as in operating NPPs.Moreover, it can be used in other types of power plants,e.g.on wind turbines, to avoid fatigue crack. In this way, it increases the safety and availability of the power plant and ensures its high production of electricity in the long-term.
