Objectives To quantify a vortex motion in left ventricular flow by Echocardiographic vector flow mapping (VFM).Background In vitro or vivo flow patterns studies have suggestedthe presence of vortices inside the left ventricleduring diastolephase However, this phenomenon has not been demonstrated and quantified in the human leftventricle. Methods 80 healthy adultvolunteers were involved. The velocity distribution imagines of the flow in the left ventricular were obtained by VFM using Doppler Echocardiograph, andseries description parameters of vortex including vortex diameters (transverse diameterDx、 vertical diameter Dy), vortex position(transverse position Px、 longitudinal position Py), vortex max flow veloeity(Vmax) anddensity number of vortex ring (N) were measured with the software named DSA-RS1.Comparatively study on the vortex flow parameters were made in phases during a cardiac cycle. Results Observations indicated that two symmetric rotating vortexes close to the mitral annulus generated by the flow through the mitral valve in the left ventricularin the period of early diastolic(ED) and late diastolic(LD)were small (ED: Dx=19.91±4.37mm, Dy=14.67±5.59mm; LD: Dx=19.22±5.46mm, Dy=12.59±5.84mm) and with highspeed(ED: Vmax=78.66±28.58cm/s, LD: Vmax=34.12±9.44cm/s).While in the mid-diastolic(MD) and isovolumic contraction(IVC) period, a counter-clockwise rotating vortexscaused by the trailing flowin the left ventricular were big (MD: Dx=33.71±6.75mm, Dy=33.12±10.25mm;IVC:Dx=31.50±6.68mm,Dy=26.90± 13.85mm) and with lowspeed (MD: Vmax=34.08±14.31 cm/s, IVC: Vmax=18.31±8.22cm/s).The small and large vortexes were different whirlpool for the different pattern of blood flow, and the vortex description parameters were different in statstics, P<0.05.Conclusions The law of the vortex flow in the left ventricular can be showed by VFM, and descripted by parameters of vortex, which can be used as a preliminary quantitative study of the complex blood flow dynamicsin heart chamber.
