Phytoremediation is a sustainable, cost-effective and environmental-friendly remediation strategy.Heavy metal (loid)s in soils can be absorbed by growing plants based on several mechanisms.Plants that suitable for phytoremediation possibly should have the features of: high growth rate, large biomass production of aerial parts, high tolerance to trace metal (loid) and great accumulation and translocation ability of trace metal (loid).Since several limitations such as the remediation period, the climatic condition, the root depth, the biomass production and the variety of the contaminants are existed in actual applications.Electro-kinetic remediation which involves a low intensity electric field has been proposed to enhance phytoremediation.Bioavailability of trace metal (loid)s in soil is a determining factor which influencing the efficiency of coupled EK-phytoremediation.It can be increased by electric field,secretion of H+ ions by roots, activities of rhizospheric microbes and application of assisted amendments.In addition, Significant electronic parameters such as electric field intensity, use of AC/DC current, mode of voltage application and electrodes configurations can affect the effectiveness of coupled EK-phytoremediation.Many practical challenges still remain and need to be researched by future studies in order to apply the coupled technology successfully.
