The endocannabinoid system consists of two G protein-coupled receptors known as cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2; their endogenous ligands, the endocannabinoids; and the enzymes responsible for ligand biosynthesis and degradation.Increasing evidence supports the view that the endocannabinoid system plays important regulatory roles in the control of food intake, energy balance, and body mass through central and peripheral mechanisms.First, the presence of the endocannabinoid system in the brain was demonstrated and the two most studied endocannabinoids, 2-arachidonoylglycerol and N-arachidonoylethanolamide were shown to increase food intake and promote weight gain in animals by activating central cannabinoid receptors.
