Single-molecule imaging and tracking techniques have been applied to living cells, and this is now revolutionizing our understanding of the plasma membrane dynamics, structure, and signal transduction functions.The plasma membrane is considered the quasi-2D-ideal fluid that is lined by the actin-based membrane-skeleton meshwork (a part of cortical actin meshwork that is directly bound to the plasma membrane), and such a unique dynamic structure appears to enable the plasma membrane functions, which I call membrane mechanisms.My group is largely responsible for advancing high-speed single-molecule tracking with simultaneous multicolor recording.
