Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra Sieb.& Zucc.) is a rich source of anthocyanins,especially cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G).Bayberry fruit extract (BFE) from Biqi were used for both in vitro and in vivo test due to its high C3G content and high antioxidant capacity.Pre-treatment ofβ cells with BFE resulted in the prevention of cell death,increased cellular viability,and decreased cell necrosis,which were induced by 800 or 1200 μmol/L H2O2.Administration of BFE significantly reduced blood glucose in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic ICR mice and increased the glucose tolerance in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (P <.05).Such results indicated that BFE might be useful in prevention and control of diabetes mellitus and diabetes-associated complications.
