Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), as a promising new class of biological fluorescent probes, have recently received considerable attention due to their unique feature.Compared with conventional fluorescent materials such as organic dyes and quantum dots (QDs), UCNPs can be excited by near-infrared (NIR) radiation and convert low energy NIR to visible light through an upconversion process, showing great advantages such as low toxicity, long emission life times, relatively high photochemical stability, and minimum photodamage as well as minimal auto-fluorescence to biological tissues.
