A small sphere in a shear flow experiences a lift force perpendicular to the flow direction due to the velocity gradient. The lift force is of great importance on various areas, including aerosol science, chemical engineering and environment science. In previous studies (Liu et al., Phys.Fluids, vol.20, 2008.107102), the lift force is calculated based on the assumption that the interaction between the gas molecule and the particle is rigid-body collision, and it is reported that the lift force directs from the high velocity region to the low velocity region. For micro-sized particles, this is physically meaningful and the results are consistent with experiments. However, as the particle size decreases to nano-scale, the model of rigid-body collision becomes inaccurate in that the influence of van der Waals forces between the gas molecules and particle cannot be ignored for nanoparticles.
