Foliar δ15N can provide an integrated index of the openness of ecosystem N cycling (i.e.,the ratio of N input or output relative to the standing N pool) (Amundson et al.2003) and has the potential to reveal spatial and temporal patterns of N cycling as well as how N cycling is altered by disturbances (Robinson 2001; Craine et al.2009).
