Objective:Tointroduceanewwayforfunctionalevaluatingtheparotidglandthroughthechanging-ratioofparotidductvolume withacidstimulation. Material and Methods:32healthyvolunteers(15menand17women;meanage,23±1.9years;agerange,21-30years)without parotidglandpathologyconfirmedbothbyhistoryandclinicalexaminationwereenrolled.3D-SPACEsequencewasperformedin everyvolunteerswitha3.0TMRimagingunit(SimensSkyra).Sinceimagesofonlysinglesideoftheparotidglandductcouldbe acquiredatonetimeforfunctionalevaluation,thesideofducttobeimagedwasdecidedinarandomizedmanner.Theimages ofparotidductswereacquiredbeforeandafter(6phases,86sforeachphase)theacidstimulation.Thevolumeoftheparotid glandductsbeforeandafteracidstimulationwaspreciselyvisualizedandmeasuredusingImageJsoftware.Therepetitive measurementdeviationanalysiswasappliedtoevaluatethetime-dependedvolumechangingratiooftheparotidglandducts. ThestatisticalsignificancewassettoP<0.05forallanalyses. Results:DynamicMRsialographydemonstratedtherelationshipbetweenthetimecoursepost-acidstimulationandthe changing-ratioofthevolumeoftheparotidglandducts.27volunteersshowedanincreaseofthetotalvolumeoftheparotid glandductaftertheacidstimulation.Amongthe27cases,22showedslowlyincreaseinthefirstphasepost-acidstimulation(TypeⅠ,slowlyrising),theother5showedrapidincreaseinthefirstphasepost-acidstimulation(TypeⅡ,rapidlyrising).5 volunteersshowedadeclinepatternafterthestimulation(TypeⅢ,decline).Therearestatisticaldifferenceswithinthethree volumechangingpatterns. Conclusion:Inthisstudy,wesuccessfullydemonstratedthechangingpatternsofthenormalparotidglandduct.Therising changing-ratioreflectedtheincreasedsecretionofsalivacausedbyacidstimulation,anditmightberelatedtothesupply impressionofsaliva.Thegreaterthechanging-ratioshows,themoreexcessivesalivaimpressionvolunteerwith.TheTypeⅢ pattern(declinepattern)mightberelatedtotheperistaltichyperfunctionoftheductbythestimulationofacid.
