Cinchonine and quinine are two cinchona alkaloids generously provided by nature[1,2] and their applications in chemistry research are notable. For example, these alkaloids and their derivatives have been used as chiral resolving reagents and organic catalysts.[3–6] In this report,we shall present the use of modified cinchonine complexes such as 9-O-benzyl-2’-phenyl-dihydrocinchonine,9-O-benzyl-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-dihydrocinchonine et al.as ligands for cyclometalation/chelation with Ir(ⅡI) to give a series of metal complexes for photophysical studies (Chart 1).
