Fatigue is a deterioration process where a material flaw, initially microscopic in size, develops into a larger defect and eventually a crack. This occurs because of a concentration of stress in the vicinity of the flaw, which is cyclically applied by the passage of live loads on the structure,or by distortion of the structure. As the crack grows, the stress concentration becomes more severe, which may further accelerate crack growth. This unstable situation may quickly cause complete failure of the structural member.
