Nature has bestowed India with a huge hydropower potential in the form of mighty rivers descending from the Himalaya and debouching into Indo-Gangetic alluvial plains.According to Central Electricity Authority, India, out of 39339.40 MW of hydro generating capacity as on December 31st 2012, 16656.75 MW comes from northern and north-eastern regions which encompass Himalaya.Yet so, a large potential remains untapped for which sustained efforts are being made.
