It has been demonstrated that tobacco is the public health enemy number one and is responsible for over five million deaths worldwide. It is the number one risk factor to the top leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and many other diseases. This destructive behavior is mainly related to individual behavior. It has been demonstrated that tobacco education alone is not sufficient for preventing members of the community from starting to smoke or helping smokers to quit. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate another element that would help a great deal in combatting the tobacco use pandemic: the development, adoption, and implementation of smokefree policies in schools, public places, and in the greater community.Researchers have conducted studies clearly showing that schools and communities that have added a smoke-free policy to their tobacco education component have reduced tobacco use rates and/or heart attack incidents.Obviously, development of a smoke-free policy is a great means for combatting the pandemic of tobacco use.Unfortunately, implementation of these policies has been challenging.Educators need to find a way to investigate ways for a comprehensive approach for including policy development in discouraging tobacco use.
