This research presents a novel stress-based topology optimization in the framework of the phase-field method.Although the phase-field approach with the evolutions of explicit curves to represent topological changes inside a domain has been applied to topology optimization [1, 2], the problem minimizing volume subject to stress constraints has not been considered yet in the framework of the phase-field method.Indeed, we conduct international research collaboration (Hanyang University, Korea and Hiroshima University, Japan) in order to apply the phase-field approach for the stress-based topology optimization.In topology optimization using the phase field method, it is common to simulate the evolutions of the explicit boundary curves dividing solid and void by the Allen-Cahn equation which simulates diffusion and reaction of explicit interface curves.Because the Allen-Cahn equation is based on the gradient information of one function, the regional stress constraints scheme [3, 4] for the localized stress constraints cannot be directly considered.Therefore the Augumented Lagrangian multiplier approach is defined and a novel numerical solution approach for the Lagrange multiplier inside the Allen-Cahn equation is newly developed.In addition, to allow the topological changes during an evolution, the topological derivatives of the regional p-norm stress constraints are developed and implemented.By solving topology optimization problem minimizing volume subject to stress constraints, the applicability of the phase field method is shown.In addition, some advantages and some disadvantages of the phase field method compared with the SIMP method are discussed.
