The demulsification process of the crude oil emulsion that produced in Daqing oil field was studied under different conditions. The result indicated that the oil-water interfacial film limited the flocculation and coalescence of the disperse phase droplets, slowed the oil-water separation, and the demulsification was mainly caused by the disperse phase droplets sedimentation. In the process of oil-water separation, three phase separation took place. The oil phase was firstly separated then the water phase was separated, finally the emulsion transition layer formed between the oil and water phase. The increase in temperature was favorable for the flocculation and coalescence of disperse phase droplets and the oil-water separation. After the chemical demulsifier was added into the emulsion, the measuring and calculation results indicated that the two phase separation took place quickly, and finally there was no emulsion transition layer between the oil and water layers. It is indicated that the coalescence of the disperse phase droplets is the controlling factor and crucial step of the demulsification.
