Glutamate receptors mediate excitatory transmission. We have focussed on a giant synapse called the calyx of Held which forms on neurons of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB).Fast and slow EPSCs are mediated by AMPA and NMDA receptors. The conductance is dominated by NMDAR currents in immature animals, but this declines as auditory function matures.
