Traditional rice-fish farming system is one globally important ingenious agricultural heritage system (GIAHS) which deserves the attention of global community.By comparing with rice monoculture (RM) and improved rice-fish farming (IRF), we conducted a study on the ecological and economic benefits of GIAHS traditional rice-fish system (TRF) in Chinas southeast Zhejiang Province, which was selected by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other international organizations as a GIAHS in 2005.We found that there was no significant difference of rice yield and rice income among RM, TRF and IRF, but the usage frequency of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was significantly higher in RM than that in TRF and IRF.Fish yield and fish income per ha.in IRF with formula feed input was significantly higher than that in TRF without formula feed input.Total output per ha.in RM was the lowest.Net income from per ha.rice field was significantly lower in RM than that in TRF and IRF.Both total and net income per ha.rice field was higher in IRF than that in IRF.Our results suggested that GIAHS rice-fish farming system provided a good model for sustainable agriculture but also faces great challenges in adapting to rapid environmental and economic change.
