In Lewis Mumford’s writings, the ancient Middle Ages to Baroque cities accounted for a considerable space, which shows his emphasis on urban development during these periods. In Mumford’s view, the road to urban development has deviated from the Baroque era. The emphasis on nature and humanity in medieval cities has been superseded by monarchs, capital and power in modern urban planning. Mumford’s understanding of the medieval city was mainly based on the historical research of the 19th century. However, his analysis of the nature of the city was whipped in and revealed the profound influence of urban planning transformation on the development of modern cities after the Middle Ages. He also hoped to learn from the Middle Ages The tradition of urban planning reversed the shortcomings of modernism.
