In order to investigate the heavy metal distribution in soils near a large uranium mining/milling area in Guangdong province,China and its influencing range,four soil profiles(1 m in depth for each)with different distance from uranium tailings were sampled and measured by ICP-MS to obtain the concentrations of U,Th,Cd,Cu,Zn,Pb,Ni and Cr.The results showed that the average concentrations of Cd,Cu,Zn,Pb,Ni and Cr were 5.54(0.71-16.85),17.35(4.46-62.29),166.12(32.65-630.50),234.23(108.82-484.45),14.39(5.08-42.92)and 143.12(20.43-797.65)mg/kg,respectively.Zn and Cr content in a few of soil samples exceed the limit of the National Soil Environmental Quality Standard Ⅲ,while the Cd content in most of the soil samples significantly exceeds the same Standard.Additionally,the concentrations of most of heavy metals in the surface soil were significantly higher than in the subsurface soil far from tailings area.Correlation analysis between these heavy metals and U content was comprehensively made.The study indicated that Cd and U likely stem from the same geochemical source,suggesting environmental contamination by the mining/milling activities.Agricultural activities were not encouraged in the study area due to high concentrations of cadmium and uranium in soils.
