To describe the collision of elastic-perfectly plastic spheres, Thornton proposed an simplified theoretical model by dividing the collision into four stages, namely elastic loading, yield, plastic loading and elastic unloading.Furthermore, coefficient of restitutions dependence of pre-impact velocity is derived.Other researchers also provided some modification of the model as well as experimental investigation.In recent years, finite element method is employed to verify the theories and some theory matches specific experiment.
