Superhydrophobic Cotton Surfaces Prepared by One-step Process Based on Modified Silica Hydrosols

The modified silica hydrosols were prepared via water-based sol-gel reaction with methyl trimethoxy silane (MTMS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) as the precursors under alkaline condition in the presence of surfactant. The modified silica hydrosols were applied to the cotton fabrics by one-step process to achieve superhydrophobicity, which provided surface roughness as well as low surface free energy on cotton surfaces. The obtained cotton fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The treated cotton fabric showed superhydrophobicity, with a water contact angle (WCA) of 152.1° for a 5 μL water droplet and a water shedding angle (WSA) of 8° for a 15 μL water droplet, and the water repellency rating (WRR) of 100.
