Visceral hyperalgesia is an important sign of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) but still lacks effective treatments.FGIDs can often be traced back to a history of previous gastrointestinal infection or inflammatory insult, which leads to prolonged changes in the excitability of the primary afferent neurons.Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channels (HCN1-4) and TRPV1 channels have previously been shown to regulate neuronal excitability and are known to regulate pain (1, 2).However, little is known about the potential differences in the expression and function of these channels in GI hypersensitivity due to different etiology.
