Herein, for the first time, natural palygorskite powders modified with sulfhydryl groups by nanotexturization method have been systematically studied for further adsorbent selection of soil remediation.Natural palygorskite(PAL)and mercapto functionalized palygorskite(MPAL)samples as adsorbents for copper cations(Cu(Ⅱ))from aqueous solution(before and after sorption)were characterized through XRD,FT-IR,SEM-EDS,EPR Spectra of Cu(Ⅱ)and XPS.The sorption behaviors including thermodynamic and kinetic parameters, effect factors and mechanisms of Cu 2+ on MPAL were studied.Thermodynamics parameters on reactions between PAL(MPAL)and copper solution were checked by Microcalorimetry.Freundlich isotherm was proved to describe the sorption data better than other isotherms and pseudo second order kinetic model could fit the sorption kinetic processes well.Based on hard and soft acids and bases theory and the results analyzed from XPS,the sorption mechanisms could be explained as primarily chemical adsorption and secondary physical adsorption.
