Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD, EC4.1.1.15) exists prevalently in the organism and specificly catalyzes the conversion of L-glutamic acid to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and CO2.GABA is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammals and plays an important role in physiological activities with such as hypotensive and diuretic effects in addition to improving the activity of brain, keeping long-lasting memory and so on.
