Membrane electrode assembly is a key component of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).The micro structure and property of the MEA will be largely affected by the fabrication technologies.Classified by the catalysts coating method, fabrication of MEA may be divided into two kinds: gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and catalyst coated membrane (CCM).For making traditional CCM type MEA using spraying or decal methods, some liquid organic solvent will be employed, thus cause environmental problems.A novel electroless deposition of catalysts on both sides of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) for making CCM type MEA for DMFC was introduced.SEM and EDX methods were employed for characterizing the properties of the catalyst film.SEM topography shows that unlike the sputtered thin catalyst film, no cracks were found over the electroless deposition catalyst film. The cross section topography testing result shows that the bonding properties between the electroless catalyst film and the PEM are good.EDX spectra analysis implies that the catalyst layer is pure with Pt in the cathode side and PtRu in the anode side. Thus it is believed that using electroless plating method for fabricating CCM type MEA is feasible.
