Hepatic progenitor cell activation and proliferation is enhanced by fibrotic conditions of the liver through Gremlin; the product of activated fibroblasts.Through its inhibitory effects on Bone morphogenic protein, it induces fibroblast proliferation in an immature state which may culminate in development of hepatocellular carcinoma.However, not all fibrotic conditions are precancerous.
