Cable supported long span bridges are typically considered as critical national infrastructure asset and the failure cost of these bridges would be enormous.Preventive maintenance through effective inspection and maintenance are essential for long term safe and economic operation of these bridges. The cable supported bridges typically exhibit complex structural behavior and are composed of many structural elements.Because inspection and maintenance technologies for typical bridges are not enough to effectively maintain the long-span cablesupported bridges, monitoring systems, nondestructive testing methods, and special inspection methods have been employed. The long term research and development projects have been carried to develop state-of-the-art inspection, monitoring, and maintenance technologies for long span cable supported bridges.Improved Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems,3D model-based bridge inspection and management systems, and cable inspection robots have been developed as part of the project.A GNSS-based monitoring system and a vision based monitoring system are also developed. The integration of advanced ICT and robot technologies will help to maintain these critical bridges.
