Long-term potentiation (LTP) has been magnetic in its appeal because of its obvious potential for being a fundamental mechanism underlying the formation and storage of memory in the brain,especially in the hippocampus.Although LTP appears persistent,current work has provided evidence that various manipulations or pharmacological treatments when applied shortly after LTP induction can reverse it.Such reversal was effectively induced by different factors,such as afferent low-frequency stimulation (LFS),brief cooling shocks,brief periods of hypoxia,application of adenosine receptor agonists and group I mGluR agonist (S)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine.This kind of reversal of synaptic strength from a potentiated state to pre-LTP levels was referred to as depotentiation (DP).Studies in the past decades have revealed several common features of DP.
