MMPs (Matrix Metalloproteases) and ADAMs (A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease) constitute a family of zinc-dependent soluble or membrane-bound metalloproteases that are able to degrade extracellular matrix proteins as well as to release growth factors or pro-inflammatory mediators like TNF-α.Disturbances in the, normally tightly regulated activity of these enzymes, can result in severe pathologies such as cancer metastasis, rheumatoid arthritis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).The ability to comprehensively measure this enzyme family in an activity-dependent manner is therefore of great importance for target-directed clinical research and diagnosis.
