Study of Mechanical Properties of Bismuth Germanium (Bi4Ge3O12) Single Crystal

  The growth, processing, use, effects and service life of crystals were affected by the quality of mechanical properties.Thus, as an important scintillator, the study of the mechanical properties of Bismuth Germanium (BGO) crystal can not be ignored.In this article, Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) crystals were grown using the vertical Bridgman method.The mechanical properties of BGO were characterized by micro-and nano-indentation techniques.Vickers hardness values under different loads, nano hardness and the elastic modulus of the BGO were obtained from micro-indentation and nano-indentation method, respectively.The fracture toughness, flexural strength, the standard hardness constant, the smallest indentation load coefficient values and brittle parameters were calculated.The results show, small size effect exists in the mechanical properties of crystals.
