  A simple, rapid and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of benzoic and sorbic acids in food was.developed by coupling in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an UV detector.A diethylamine-modified poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) monolithic capillary column was selected as the extraction medium, and high extraction capability towards the two analytes in food samples was achieved under optimum condition.After dilution with phosphate solution (0.02 mol/L, pH 4.0), the carbonated drink, juice drink, sauce and jam samples could be directly injected into the device for extraction.For the succade samples, a small amount of acetonitrile was required to extract analytes prior to dilution with phosphate solution (0.02 mol/L, pH 4.0).The detection limits for benzoic and sorbic acids were found to be 1.2 ng/mL and 0.9 ng/mL, respectively.Good linearity could be achieved over the range 5-20000 ng/mL for the two analytes with regression coefficients above 0.999.The reproducibility of the method was respectively evaluated at intra-and inter-day precisions, with the resulting relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 4.4 and 9.9%, respectively.The method was successfully applied to the analysis of benzoic acid and sorbic acid in real food samples.
