Background: The conventional Ilizarov external fixation has been widely used for limb lengthening across the globe.Recent years many researchers have used a supplementary intramedullary nail in the limb-lengthening process.Whether its effects were improved and whether it caused more complications remains unclear.Our aim is to investigate the effectiveness and complications of supplementary intramedullary nail during tibial lengthening.Methods: To evaluate the effectiveness and complications of supplementary intramedullary nail (IMN) in conventional Ilizarov external fixation tibial lengthening, Pubmed was searched.Studies comparing the outcomes of supplementary IMN and conventional Ilizarov external fixation in tibial lengthening were identified.Two independent investigators examined titles and abstracts of the articles to assess eligibility, extract data and assess risk of bias.
