In order to better understand the biological response to aeolian input of iron in the Southern Ocean,we compare observed net community production (NCP) with modeled values of the input rates of soluble iron from aerosols. In the Fe deposition model,Fe solubility increases with transport time.NCP values are derived from an extensive Southern Ocean data set of mixed-layer O2/Ar ratios (from which biological O2 may be calculated).More than 700 NCP measurements have now been performed in most regions of the Southern Ocean.
