Background and aims:Vascular calcification is common in people with diabetes and its presence predicts premature mortality. There is a growing body of evidence that advanced glycation end products (AGEs),senescent macroprotein derivatives formed at an accelerated rate in diabetes, play an important role in the pathogenesis of accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetes. Moreover, results of previous studies suggest that AGEs may modulate vascular calcification.
