按照陈毓川等(2006)矿床成矿系列是在特定的四维时间-空间域中,由特定的地质成矿作用形成的有成因联系的矿床组合。但是,自然界有许多矿床并不都是一次成矿作用形成的,常常出现虽然不是同一地质构造旋回、同一地质环境、同一次地质成矿作用形成,但却是以某种地质建造为纽带、有内在成因联系的矿床组合。正如成矿系列理论创立者陈毓川等(2006)曾经指出:“在同一地区先后形成的矿床成矿系列具有一定的继承性及演变性,并可出现对早期矿床成矿系列的叠加、改造。”
