First Report of Blueberry Leaf Spot Caused by Alternaria alternatea on Blueberry in China

  Blueberry has become an important economical fruit crop in China in recent years.In August 2012, a severe foliar disease was observed on mature highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cv.Bluecrop in Qingdao, Shandong province of China.About 70% bushes showed the symptoms on leaves, which appeared as brown spot, round or nearly round lesions with a gray center, 3 to 6mm in diameter, several spots often gathering together to form a larger irregular spot, and dried lesion centers abscised to form holes after wind, rain or slight vibration.These symptoms are different from the previously reported blueberry leaf spot caused by Alternaria tenuissimain China (1).The tissue from margin of necrotic leaf spots, around 4mm ×4mm was surface sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 1min, plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA, pH nature), and then incubated at 27℃ in the dark for 7 days.
