The genera in the order Thalassiosirales are characterized by having a single rimoportula (labiate process), and fultoportulae (strutted processes) with satellite pores at their base, which are more clearly seen in internal valve view.The number of satellite pores varies among the genera and between species, but in general most modern taxa bear 2-4 satellite pores.
