Biogeochemical investigations of plant species Oriza sativa have been carried out in the Patancheru industrial area, near Hyderabad city,India to study the distribution of Heavy metals,Rare earth elements in the roots and leaves of the plant species. The study area(Latitudes 17degrees 13′ – 17degrees 35′ N; Longitudes 78degrees 12′ 30′′ – 78degrees 17′ 30′′ E)is located towards North of Hyderabad city and spread over in an area of about 124 sq km.The area is semiarid and subtropical climatic conditions prevail with temperature varying between 25 to 45degrees c and occupied by Pink and the Grey granites of Archaean age.Distribution of 19 heavy and trace elements viz.Be,B,Cr,Mn,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Se,Rb,Sr,Y,Zr,Mo,Cd,Sb,Ba and Pb have been studied in the plant species Oriza sativa. The trace element Beryllium is found to be present in high concentrations(0.38ppm-0.55ppm).The uptake of element Cobalt(34ppm)and Nickel(48ppm)are found to be high.Yttrium(11.88ppm),Zirconium(46.96ppm),Cadmium(0.14ppm),Antimony(0.45ppm),Lead(31.39ppm)and Barium(500ppm)are taken up in large amounts by the plant Oryza sativa.Among heavy metals, lead is a potential pollutant that readily accumulates in soils and sediments. It is observed that most of the toxic trace elements are accumulated in high concentration in edible plant species Oryza sativa. The distribution of 14 Rare earth elements – La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho,Er,Tm,Yb and Lu are studied. It is observed that the element Lanthanum,Cerium,Praseodymium,Neodymium,Samarium,Europium,Gadolinium,Terbium,Dysprosium,Holmium,Erbium,Thulium,Ytterbium and Lutetium are found in high concentrations in plants Oryza sativa. The bio transfers of toxic metals from soil and water to plants, which are subsequently consumed by humans or domestic live stock, represent a route by which human exposure to heavy metals is substantially increased.Reduction in the contamination of both soil and groundwater minimize the risk of human exposure.
