Background Postoperative feeding strategy is essential for optimal patient outcomes in cleft lip and palate infants.The purpose of this study was to determine the evidenced-based value of immediate unrestricted or restricted feeding in both cleft lip and cleft palate patients.Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted using Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, CBM and Wanfang Med Online.Two authors independently reviewed the literature and included all the studies comparing postoperative unrestricted feeding versus restricted feeding in cleft lip and palate patients.A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the incidence of postoperative complications (dehiscence, bleeding and fistula), childrens reaction, anthropometric parameters,hospital stay and cost.
