A kind of N doped Al-4wt.%Ti-1wt.% C (Al-4Ti-1C-N for short) master alloy was prepared and its phase component and microstructure were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) etc.The results show that TiCx particle doped with trace N element is the main second phase in Al-4Ti-1C-N master alloy.Compared with Al-5Ti-1B, the master alloy performs well on refining a-Al grain and its secondary dendrite arm spacing for A356 alloy.The average grain size and secondary dendrite arm spacing are 231 μm and 28 μm respectively refined by Al-4Ti-lC-N.When it comes to mechanic properties, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation are 297 Mpa and 4.01% refined by Al-4Ti-1C-N master alloy.The elongation of A356 alloy refined by Al-4Ti-1C-N increases 32% compared with that by Al-5Ti-1B.
