The freshwater crayfish Redclaw (Cherax quadricarinatus) is native to tropical northern Australia.The farming of the species started in 1980s in Australia, however after initial fast expansion, the growth of redclaw aquaculture industry in Australia had stagnated and more recently, has started to decline although it remains a dedicated industry producing approximately 60 tonnes annually worth around A$1 million.
