Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the short-term neural consequences of early-life otitis media and associated hearing loss upon language skills of pre-school-aged children.Method: In a prospective study, pure right middle-ear otitis was documented in 12 children aged 3-6 years.Both auditory evoked potentials and language comprehension and production were evaluated after at least one year outcome.Wavelet analysis of brainstem evoked responses Ⅲ-Ⅴ and middle latency auditory Na-Pa complex showed the gammaband power of these responses, which was related to language testing scores.20 age-matched controls were used for comparison.Results: A positive correlation was found between gamma-band power reduction in the two analysed windows and language scores.The correlation was specially high for the middle latency response.Conclusion: The present study shows that negative consequences of early-life otitis media or the underlying hearing loss derive from neuroplasticity changes originated not only at the cortical primary areas but at the cochlear nucleus and rostral tegmentum as well.
