Shigella flexneri,which is closely related to Escherichia coli,is the most common cause of the endemic form of shigellosis.The expression of its virulence genes is induced under growth conditions similar to those found at the site of invasion.For example,a temperature of 37 °C is a particularly important environmental signal.
