Plant expansins are non-hydrolytic proteins that induce plant cell wall-loosening and cellulose disruption by disrupting hydrogen bonding between cell wall polysaccharides without exerting cellulose-hydrolytic activity. The enhancement of expansins for the hydrolytic activity of cellulase has been found in the previous reports, and the disruption activity of expansins are believed to confer a synergistic effect to the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose by enabling cellulose to be more accessible to the cellulase.
