Head and neck cancer is linked to smoking and alcohol use. However, the human papilloma virus (HPV) is an etiological agent of oral cancer (oral cavity and oropharynx).Subsequent sporadic reports supporting this observation appeared as an epidemiological wave began to sweep across Western Europe and North America.Oncogenic high-risk HPV subtypes are causative in some subsets of the disease in these regions.Since then, theincidence of this disease has grown to epidemic levels, affecting people in all countries.Hence, oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC)has now become the most common head and neck cancer in many North American cancer centers. In addition, HPV is the cause of80% of such cancers.
