A sand culture experiment in green house was carried out in order to study the changes in maize seedling growth, microscopic structure and a series of physiological and biochemical properties under 60 μM cadmium stress. The results showed that the growth of seedling is inhibited by Cd stress, since its height, leaf length and width, as well as the dry/fresh weight and water content, were obviously decreased compared with the control group. The results also showed that under 60 μM cadmium stress, chlorophyll fluorescent parameters of maize leaves were deeply reduced, while the content of MDA was largely promoted. In addition, leaf origin of the treated groups were seriously damaged, with a scorched and wilted appearance.Meanwhile, microscope inspection showed the growth of leaf cell was also suppressed at high Cd concentration. In conclusion, maize seedlings showed obvious symptoms under 60 μM cadmium treatment.
