Steering wheel torque feedback is one of the critical factors for drivers to ensure vehicle handling and driving safety. Therefore, accurately modelling the torque feedback is essential for driving simulator.Conventionally the torque has been mainly provided by an electric motor along with a transmission system. However, the torque response of the system is often slow with significant time delay, which can result in drivers, discomfort and poor driving performance. This paper presents a novel torque feedback device with magne to rheological(MR)fluid and a brushless DC motor.A phase separation control method is also proposed to control its feedback torque.Simulation has been conducted to compare the proposed system with the systems under conventional approaches and the results show that the feedback torque from the proposed system has smaller time delay and overshoot, and can greatly improve the response and accuracy of the torque feedback for automobile driving simulator.
